I can't write EXIT data or import into catalog

I wanted to do a write EXIF data to all pictures in library.  The program stopped & said that I had 42 disconnected picture & wanted to find them..  I found the pictures on an old CD & pasted them into the appropriate  folder.  Windows told me that all  photos were already in folder.  I said to replace originals.

I then try to re import the same pictures from folder but it already told me that they were in catalog & would not import.  I tried to write data to EXIF to all pictures & same time happened like first & I could not get them to display in catalog.  All pictures had place names & I can't find them by doing a file name search either.  Whats going on?
