Question

import fails to display results

I am a newbie to photoshop elements and falling at the first hurdle.  I am doing a bulk import of my photographs and there are some 25K photographs in on folder.  The import seems to work i.e. it completes, no complaints but nothing ever shows up.  No warnings, no error messages.....and most importantly no images.  I've tried multiple occasions also using the import from files and folders with exactly the same result.

I know the import is fundementally working as I carved off a few hundred pictures into a another folder and they imported fine.  I can only assume there are one or more files which are causing some sort of issue but with no indication of just which file(s) it is then its going to take a long time to binary chop my way through 25K images.

There must be some way of finding out why the import is failing.

The catlogue seems to have increase in size since the import.  I have optomised and repaired it, all to no effect.  I've deleted the catalogue and re-imported multiple times, no luck.

Current Catalog:
Catalog Name: Family Catalog
Catalog Location: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\Family Catalog\
Catalog Size: 5.1MB
Catalog Cache Size: 682MB

I have the exact same problem. I am point to a network share, not a mapped drive.

Organizer completes the process, asks about tags, show a report of files it will not import, but then shows nothing.

It just goes back to the main page like you never did anything.

It shows 0 Item on the bottom left and no folders are displayed.

In the "Import Media" window of the Bulk Import process, it indeed does show the folder on my NAS.

And it shows all subfolders and displays thumbnails of the pictures.

Is there a log file somewhere so I can troubleshoot this?

Thank you for any advice.

I tried both (network share and mapped it with a drive letter). Does not make a difference. I worked around it by only reading one subdirectory at the time.

Yep, that's what I ended up doing.

How are you importing (via Files and Folders or In Bulk)?  Is the process completing?   Are you getting any messages after the import?

Yes, it will take a long time to import 40,000 files via a NAS.  And if you view the grid using the Sort by Import Batch, does that give you any clues as to what may have happened?

I use the bulk import. All goes the same as when I do a subdirectory that does work. All files are being read (and that takes a couple of hours). After that the tag import. So all goes normally. Only after it is finished 0 files in the catalogue. At first I thougt that it might take a while before they show up but alas. I tried this multiple times because at first I thought that I made a mistake. But after the second failure tried a small subdirectory and that went fine.

As Michel indicates, the use of a NAS may be the problem.  How do you have the NAS mapped?  I think you need to map it to a drive letter rather than a network name.  I have also seen issues with network permissions.

Although it is possible to use a NAS for catalog media, it is not recommended and may present performance issues.  See this post from an Adobe employee.

I have it mapped. But again as soon as I select a subdir from the main dir on the NAS it works. So I do not think the NAS is the problem. And do note that the catalog is not on the NAS. The catalog is on a SSD on my computer, only the photo's are on the NAS. My gut feeling is still that it is the amount what is causing the problem allthough the whole proces finishes just fine. Only the result is zero photo's in the catalogue.

@R.Catersels, we need more information from you in order to be able to help.

What OS and version of Elements are you using?

You say that you have one main folder with all of your photos, but you also talk about subdirectories.  Please explain your setup.

How are you trying to view the photos in your catalog?  If you are using the Folder panel on the left side of the screen, it will only show the photos in the particular folder that you have selected.  So, if you select a My Pictures folder as your "main folder",  it will not show any images contained in any sub-folders.  You would have to select each sub-folder to see its contents.  If you click on the All Media arrow-button at the top left of the grid, do you see all of the photos that you expect to see in the catalog?

How many files are in your catalog?  Without selecting any of the images on display, the number will be shown in the lower left of the status bar.  Is this consistent with how many photos you expect to have in your catalog?

I have photoshop elements 2022. All the pictures are on a NAS. So I have one main directory with inside multiple level subdirectories. I use year and then inside it subdir with the name year month day. There are about 40000 files in roughly 2200 subdirectories. Importing a year does work. But importing from the main root it does not. Tried multiple times. No file get's imported. I just gave up and doing subdirectory imports. The main directory has only 40 subdirectories so it is doable but still a very strange issue.

@R.Catersels and @Greg_S.

It's quite possible that the 'bulk import' from a NAS is not supported.

What happens if you click on the All Media button?  Are you then able to see any photos?

In theory, you cannot import any true duplicate files into a catalog.

Have you moved or deleted files using Windows Explorer rather than the Organizer's Folder Panel?  You should never do this.

If you are not seeing any images in the grid, I suggest you create a new catalog and start over. Go to File>Manage Catalogs>New.  (It's not clear from your post whether you have  tried this or simply tried to import the same folder multiple times into the original catalog.)

Added:  Provide a screenshot of any error messages you receive during the import.

I have the exact same issue. I have one main folder with all my pcitures. Doing an import from the main folder all seems to work ok. It even recognizes tags. But after completing the proces no pictures. When I do only a subdirectory then all works as expected. It seems it chokes on handling large imports.

OK.  Can you give us a screenshot of what you are seeing/not seeing.

In the lower left status bar, how many items is it showing and what is the date range?  If you are zoomed into a single image and it only shows 1 item, zoom out to display multiple images and press Shift+Ctrl+A to make sure none are selected.

Does the status bar display what you are expecting to see for all of your imported photos?

You say that you have all of your photos in one folder?  Is that the My Pictures folder and do you have any sub-folders?  I suspect you have multiple folders and are using the Folders panel on the left to select your view.  If this is the case, selecting the My Pictures folder will only display images stored in that particular folder, not all of the images in the sub-folders.  If my theory is correct, click on the All Media button at the top of the window and all of the photos in your catalog will be displayed.

If you wish to view your photos by folder, also make sure that you are in the Tree View, not the List View.  Click on the hamburger button next to the My Folders heading and make sure that View as Tree is checked.  This will replicate the Windows Explorer tree.

Let us know if any of this helps.  If not, we will have some other options to consider.

Once again Greg thanks for the suggestions.  So I found a de-duplicator and pruned the number of files just to speed things up.  After that I was able to see that the import of now 14K files (yes I had way too many dups) stops at the same number every single time i.e. 9704, it says 9704 imported but none of them display.  The screen shot below is after the import

also seems that I did not answer all of your questions.

1. it is my pitctures I am using, I had them all on a network share but moved them to the local hard disk and the default my pictures directory in case this was the issue

2. there are a few folders in there but I have made no attempt to import these to reduce the size of the import and eliminate them as the issue.

thanks again

Are you seeing zero photos in the Organizer?  If so, press Ctrl+1.  You may have accidentally pressed this shortcut combination and removed the visibility of all photos.

nice suggestion Greg but sadly its not that.  As I mentioned i have a folder with a small selection of my photos which it is displaying.  However I did try your suggestion and it dutifully turned off the ones which are displaying and then back on again when repeated but it was only the small number in that folder and only those.

Any other bright suggestions, happy to try anything.
