Import from local disc and copy files

I am currently using Photoshop Elements 14 on a Windows 10 system but am not against upgrading if that would help. I have thousands of photo files stored across multiple discs. Some external and some are system discs. This disorginization has come from multiple system crashes over the years and emergency measures to copy files before loosing them. I would like to "import" all of these pictures into a new catalog AND copy them on import to a new external disc. Is this possible with Elements? or do I need to find some third party utility to accomplish this task?

    Here is one approach that should work:

    1. Create your new catalog.
    2. Import your files from each of your source discs to the new catalog.  If you have duplicate files, this process should eliminate them since in theory Elements does not allow duplicate files in a single catalog.  If this is the case, you may receive warning messages that certain files were not imported because they already exist in the catalog.
    3. Once all of the files have been imported, create a full backup copy of the catalog.  This will backup both the catalog database files and all of your media files.
    4. Restore the catalog to your new external drive.  (If you have a large external drive, you can create the backup and restoration on the same drive, but it would probably be faster to use separate drives.)
    5. During the Restore process you will be given several choices for the new location of the files.  I suggest that you use the New Location option.  You can then select (and/or create) a new main folder such as My Pictures and all of the existing folders from your various drives will be flattened and placed under the main folder.  So you will be left with a main folder and a single level of sub-folders under it.  If you need to maintain your folder structure, then you should use the New Location with Restore Original Structure option.

      Wow Greg, Thanks a bunch. This looks like it will do exactly what I need. I'm not really looking to maintain existing folder structure at this point. I just need to get everything under one roof so I can streamline my hardware needs. I have tried to re-organize manually post crash but there's 40,000 pictures or so without counting the numerous duplicates and I just don't have the time or the attention span to accomplish this feat. I'll have to process through the steps a few times in my head to make sure we're on the same wavelength but this looks like a great solution. Thanks again for taking the time to answer.
