Import into catalog failing

Using Photoshop Elemements 2024 on Windows 11. New install, so I started the import of photos from my iPhone, which completed fine. I start up Organizer and I get a message that there are over 20000 items to import to the catalog. The import starts and then after about 400 items (number is not the same every time) the import fails and I get a popup with message asking if I want to sent a report to Adobe. I say yes the first time, but not subsequent failures. There are no details in the message in the error popup, so I am lost on what to do. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you show us a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Press the Shift key when you launch the Organizer and the Catalog Manager dialog should appear.  If that doesn't work, you can try contacting Elements support. You can start a chat session by going to the Contact Adobe Support page.  Make sure you are signed into your Adobe account and try typing Agent when the chat window opens. (If you use my link, the chat window should open automatically.)

So, as I now understand it, the files are continuing to be imported into the catalog, several hundred at a time.  And each time the process stops with a crash reporter message popping up.  If this is what is happening, then I would suggest continuing with the process until all of the files are imported.  You can also keep sending the crash reporter messages to Adobe as the multiple messages may get the attention of someone on the engineering team.

Importing photos and videos from iPhones has always been problematic.  I vaguely recall having a similar situation myself - but probably not with 20k photos.  I can give you some suggestions to get out of the import process, but in the long run continuing the import may be the most efficient.

I'm guessing that because of the large number of files involved in the import, there is a memory leak somewhere.  But it sounds like, ulitmately, the import will be successful.

Let me know if you want some different ideas.

I have restarted Organizer after each crash, and it seems like it is starting a the beginning each time and since each time it crashes, it looks like nothing is getting imported into the catalog. So I am stuck!

OK.  Try the following:

  • Go to File>Manage Catalogs
  • Create and open a new catalog
  • You may get an option to start importing media.  If you do, you will probably get an indication that the files are being imported from your Pictures folder.
  • If you do not get an automatic import, try using the Import>In Bulk . . . option.  This will also import all of the photos stored in your Pictures directory.

It will take quite a while to import 20,000 photos.  Do you have other photos stored in your Pictures folder that are not from your iPhone?

Also, have you used a prior version of Elements with a working catalog?  If so, you should convert that catalog instead of the above.  I will await your reply before giving further directions.

This may be a little difficult to diagnose, so bear with me as I ask some questions.

Please confirm that you imported the photos from your iPhone, using the Import>From Camera or Card Reader option.

Have the photos all been saved to your hard drive?  If so, are you trying to import them using the From Files and Folders option?

Each time you try to import the files, are ~400 new files being imported to the catalog?

If the photos have been saved to your hard drive, what folder organization have you used e.g. separate folders for date taken, or by month etc.?

What is the format of the files you have taken on the phone (heic or jpg or raw)?

What options have you set on the phone for import to the computer (original or most compatible)?

Grreg, thanks for replying to my post. I'll try to answer your questions. I started the process by connecting my iPhone to my computer and using the Import from Camera option. All 20000+ photos were copied from my iPhone to the Pictures folder with multiple sub-folders for date taken. It looks like the files are a mix of .jpg and .heic, with a few .mov. I am not sure about your last question about option on my phone, I have not changed any setting related to this. I am not using any option in Organizer to do the import. As soon as I open Organizer, I get a pop up window, with message saying New files have been loaded (see screenshot). When I click Yes or No, it starts the import of the 20,000+ files. I just did this and get the same error message that I got in my original post, this time after 930 files. There are 2 buttons to send report to Adobe or not, after I click either button, then Organizer crashes.
