Question

In Win11 the Organizer does not recognize my NEF files.

I'm migrating Photoshop Elements 2023 from Windows 10 to a new windows 11 PC.
Windows 10 is a Dell XPS 8900
Windows 11 is a Dell XPS 8960

On the new win11 the Organizer does not recognize the NEF files.

This appears to be a ACR(Adobe Camera Raw) problem, However after I installed PSE on Win11 and prior to the restore I updated ACR from the Organizer ; > Help > Install Camera RAW. If I don't do this the restore fails to copy any NEF files.

The restore completes successfully. Organizer opens , jpegs are presented (with all tags and keywords), but the NEFs are grayed out with the small broken letter icon in the middle.

Here is my initial ACR update:
Elements > Help > Install Camera Raw...
Adobe Photoshop Elements Add-on Utilities 2023
Default location
Continue
Succeeded

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi 210,651 Kbytes
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 21\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi 162,877 Kbytes

I Successfully checked for the Nikon Z8 at:
\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera

I have individually downloaded ACR versions 16 and 17 and manually install them. The install appears to be successful but the problem does not resolve.

The manual installs are from :
AdobeCameraRaw_x64_17_0.exe
AdobeCameraRaw_x64_16_0.exe

ACR 16.1 is the current version on the Win10 PC

In the past I had to copy Camera Raw.8bi from ...\CC\File Formats to ...\Elements 21\File Formats\

Now I try to copy the file and get this error:
You need permission to perform this action

In a google search I find this:
How to take ownership of files and folders

Open File Explorer.
Browse and find the file or folder you want to have full access.
Right-click it, and select Properties.
Click the Security tab to access the NTFS permissions.
Click the Advanced button.

But this results in this error:
The permissions on File Formats are incorrectly ordered,
which may cause some entries to be ineffective.
OK

I don't want to further pursue this without being provide a solution from someone more skilled than myself at this.

Thank you!

P.S. I emailed the customercare-support@adobe.com on the as well

I have a 3 day photoshoot this week and would like this resolved asap

One last question. How do I get rid of the annoying popup that wants me to upgrade Elements?

Why did you mess with a working ACR?  There is no valid reason to update ACR from 16 to 17 unless you buy a new camera.  Elements will not give you any enhanced features.

Simply downloading and running the latest ACR file will not install ACR 17 into Elements.  That is why it was necessary to copy the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Photoshop CC plug-in folder to the Elements folder.  It is a workaround that allowed you to install ACR 16 into Elements 2023.

The broken thumbnails were created when you didn't have the correct ACR.  If you select the broken thumbnails and press Ctrl+Shift+U, the thumbnails should update.

Why did you mess with a working ACR?

Because all the problems I've run into getting PSE installed and Restored, I figured it couln't hurt. More on that to come.

I appreciate the into on the sequence to Update the Thumbnails. It worked great. But I have several thousand photo files created from the Z8 that  I would have to select and update.  That would take a lot of time. So before bed last night I wiped PSE of the PC , re-installed, properly updated and copied ACR to the Elements folder and restored.

All is working as expected and Thank you for you assistance.

BTW,  'Organizer > Help > Install Camera RAW' installed Version 17 to the ..\CC\File Formats folder

So even though I didn't the latest, Adobe thought I shuld have it

Well, there's your problem.  Your Z8 camera requires ACR 15.3.

Can you show us a screenshot of the message.  This seems to be a standard Windows 11 message that pops up whenever I install a program or save a file that may have system implications.  Normally, the message states that permission is required and an option is provided to give the permission.  Is the message perhaps hidden behind another window?  If so, it will be available in the task bar.

The last screenshot I'm attempting to upload show the final error :

The action can't be completed because the folder or a file is open in

another program.

Close the folder or file and try again

That screenshot also contain Task Manager withno Adobe related tasks open

Does the Editor recognize the raw files?

What version of ACR is actually installed in Elements?  (Go to the Editor's Help>About Plug-in>Camera Raw)

Hi Greg

From Editor:
Help > About Plug-in > Camera Raw
Version 14.4.0.1121

Help > Install Camera Raw

Location:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe

Still shows 14.4
Exit Editor and Organizer and restart
Still shows 14.4
