When I try an incremental backup in PSE14 I get this message:

Any advice would be much appreciated as doing a full backup each time is becoming a pain

TIA

Chris

Hi @Chuff2010 ,

Is it the first time you get that error message after having made a number of successful incremental backups?

I am asking because the error can easily arise for first time users of incremental backups. They need to take care to create full and incremental backups by naming each of them with an explicit name, like 'Incr. Backup 3 - 2022 01 18'.

It looks like the 'catalog.pse14db' is locked because it is already open in the process.

Anyway, I do urge all users wanting to use the incremental backups to take the time to test it by performing a real restore on a test drive. Most users are successful in backing up but too many don't succeed in restoring it.

As has been stated in your previous post, incremental backups don't save a lot of time. Maybe making full backups in a night job alternatively on two different external drives would be more practical for you. What is the size of a full backup in your case?

Also, you may be aware that PSE2021 and 2022 have a feature to save only the catalog folder (the databases, not the photo files). You can do it simply from the explorer on your PSE14. Just locate your catalog folder (menu Help >> System Info) and copy  it elsewhere regularly. That does not protect you as well as a full backup but that is much faster and you may be safe enough with full backups at larger time intervals. Similarly, if your library is very big (more than 1 tB) you might seach for other external backup or syncing solutions. Even with those, a full backup at reasonable intervals is necessary, especially if you want to move to a new computer.
