Installing Elements 12 on Dell Inspiron 15 7000

I have been running element 9 on my hp envy which is now dying - i have bought and am trying to install elements 12 on my new Dell - I have put the serial number on the box in over and over and it keeps telling me it's an invalid number      what can i do - this is not my first rodeo I have been using many versions of elements on many computers for years and never had a serial number problem before.
