Issues running on 2019 16" MacBook Pro

Hello. This is my first post here. I am currently running the latest version of Big Sur on the 16 GB version of the 16" MacBook Pro.

When I try and use selection tools on photos or graphics, the image and tool bars disappear leaving only the brush. I cannot see what I am trying to select on screen as it is turned to gray. Is this a known issue? Are other users experiencing this? I do not recall issues using this on my former 2013 MacBook Pro.
