Question

JPGs always opening in Camera Raw?

Windows 10, PSE 14.1, Camera Raw 9.5

Just started using CR on jpgs. Before I ever used CR, jpgs would open "normally" in PSE. However, once I first used CR, all jpgs are now opening in CR.  I would like to gain control and be able to have jpgs open in CR when I choose to do so...not automatically. I have looked at PSE's Preferences, but there was no control for this.

How does it work for me?

Jpgs do open in the editor the first time.

If I open a jpeg in ACR, which is most of the time, the next time I open it (even from the organizer), it automatically opens in ACR.

The jpeg still opens normally in other editors, without the editing settings stored in the metadata header of the jpeg file.

Just like you, if the file has been opened and saved ('Done' or 'Open') in ACR, I can no longer open the file directly in the editor.

As the same exact issue(s) exist among us, I guess that is just the way it is and I'll have to learn to live with it, eh?

In previous PSE versions, it was possible to use the option to 'Open As' and to state as jpegs. That no longer works.

It seems that you - sometimes - open jpegs in ACR, whereas I try to always open jpegs in ACR for superior editing and must faster workflow.

If you open the jpeg with any other third-party software, the ACR edits will be ignored. If you resave the jpeg, the Elements editor will open it without the ACR edits.

If you save a version set including the ACR edits, the resulting jpeg version will open directly in the editor.

If you open a jpeg in ACR, make your edits and save as a DNG (save) and exit with 'Cancel' button, you still have your original jpeg and a DNG version, unfortunately not in a version set.

So, I don't know of any quick and easy workaround to open the edited in ACR jpeg in its original state directly from the editor.

    Edit:

Once the jpeg is opened in ACR you can remove the settings and go back to the original state.

You can't open a jpeg in ACR directly from the organizer. You have to open the jpeg or the set of jpegs from the editor 'Open in ACR' command.

However, when you have opened a jpeg normally in the editor, there is a script in the very affordable add-on Elements+ software which enables you to open any layer in the ACR, edit it and include it back in the layers palette. If you don't mind saving the resulting original plus ACR edited layer in a psd format, you can save both.
