Lost tags upgrading from elements 2018 to 2025

I've just upgraded from elements 2018 to 2025. I then converted my 2018 catalog. Then followed process (using drop down menu under tags) to copy tags info for 2018 to a folder, then to 2015. Result is that tags are visible in 2025, but no photos attached (but all the photos are there). Any help gratefully received.

@TimFlute said:  Organiser opened to the catalog I had previously converted from Elements 2018 (My Catalog 1). Still nothing associated with the tags.

Simply reinstalling the program will not trigger the conversion-of-catalog-on-first-use feature.

You need to open the Convert dialog for that option to appear.  BTW, where is your Elements 2018 folder located?  Is it on your F drive (which is the Custom Location shown in your screenshot) or is it in the default location (which is where the My Catalog 1 converted catalog seems to be).

It is probably worth taking another stab at converting the Elements 2018 catalog, but make sure you follow these instructions:

  • Launch Elements 2018 and make sure the catalog with all the tags is open.
  • Go to Help>Sys Info...   There you will find the exact location of the catalog folder.  (I am guessing that it is on the F drive and is named My Catalog.)  Make note of the folder location and close the program.
  • Go to the Elements 2025 File>Manage Catalogs and click the Convert button to open the catalog conversion dialog.
  • Check the Show Previously Converted Catalogs box.
  • Click on the Find More Catalogs button.
  • Navigate to the Elements 2018 catalog folder noted before, and select the folder.
  • Hopefully, only one catalog will appear in the list of catalogs.  If more than one appears, try to figure out which is the correct catalog to convert.  It will show that it was created by Elements 2018, the date it was last used (presumably the current date) and will also display the number of media files (photos and videos) within the catalog).
  • Select the catalog and click the Convert button.
  • Be patient!!  The conversion will take a while to complete.  Do nothing further until you get a message that the conversion has been completed successfully.
  • The converted catalog should be named My Catalog X.  Since it is unclear to me where your other converted catalogs are located, I can't give you an exact name.

If this does not work for you, then restoring the backup, using Elements 2025 will also work.  But you may have to be careful about the options you use for the Restore process, in order to avoid a duplicate file structure.  I will need more information about that before giving you guidance.

Hi Greg. I meant to let you know before that you've sorted my problem. There were still a few odd bits not quite right after, but nothing insurmountable. Thank you very much for all your help!

If you properly converted the catalog from 2018 to 2025, there is no need to transfer the tag structure separately.  If the catalog conversion did not go as expected, you can convert the catalog again.  (But you will probably have to check the box for previously converted catalogs in order for the 2018 catalog to be displayed in the Convert dialog.)  If you need further help, please show us relevant screenshots.

And just to be clear, how did you convert your catalog from 2018 to 2025?  Did you accept the option to convert the catalog on first launch of the Organizer?  Or did you use the File>Manage Catalogs>Convert dialog?

Hi Greg. I've just tried again. I started by uninstalling and reinstalling Elements 2025. Organiser opened to the catalog I had previously converted from Elements 2018 (My Catalog 1). Still nothing associated with the tags. I will include some screenshots. Note that, to avoid confusing you further,  I have imported some more photos into Elements 2025 since installing it.

I have now realised that the main categories are present,  but no sub categories and no photos. As shown in the Elements 2025 no media message shot attached. When I open the Manage Catalogs tab I cannot see an option to open previously converted catalogs - Catalog Convert attachment. I can still open my Elements 2018, where all the tags are intact, and the screenshot shows the structure - Elements 2018 with sub-categories , and Elements 2018 with tags and photos attachments.

My problem seems to be accessing these tags? And in reply to your question about how I converted the catalog in the first place, I'm no longer sure. I may have done it on first launch of the Organiser. I have definitely now tried it several times using the File>Manage Catalogs>Convert dialog!

Thank you very much for your help so far.

I also forgot to say that I still have Elements 18, with all the taggging intact.
