make a selection, create a layer, return to selection to make an inverse selection layer

When I make a selection and create a layer using layer via copy (CTL-J), is there a way to go back to the background layer and have the selection I made still visible so I can then select inverse and make a seperate layer of the inverse selection? Right now my only path seems to use the selection tool to re-select a new selection and proceed from there. thanks

Try this:

1. Open your picture file

2. Duplicate the Background Layer. This will be the Background copy layer.

3. Shut off the visibility of the Backgeond copy layer by clicking on the eye icon in the Layers palette.

4. Make your selection on the Background Layer, and press CTRL+J to place it on its own layer - selection A

5. Shut off the visibility of everything , and turn on the Background Copy layer

6. Make your next selection and press CTRL+J  - selection B

7. You now have A+B surrounded by transparency to deal with as you see fit.

Ctrl click on the newly copied layer thumbnail in the layers panel to load the selection of the contents which should be the same selection as your original selection.
