Question

Making a Template

I have a shape that someone made for me and sent it to me in JPG.

I want to put it on a PSE page with white background and use the shape to make transparent cutouts on the sheet so I can slip pictures behind these cutouts.

Can someone tell me how I do this please.

Assuming my last reply answers your problem, you should be able to create the template using the purple shape using my first instructions.

Let me know how it goes.

In the case of the oval, try this:

    1. Create the template and rename the Background layer as I previously described.

    2. Activate the Elliptical Marquee tool and set options Fixed Size, Width 16mm, Height 11mm.

    3. Click in the template to draw the ellipse.

    4. <Delete>.  The deleted ellipse is replaced by transparency but the ellipse is still there (marching ants).

    5. Use mouse and/or arrow keys to position the ellipse to the next spot.

    6. Repeats steps 4,5 for the remaining cutouts.

Note that in the Layers palette, the cutouts also appear with the transparency checkerboard pattern.

Save the final result as a PSD file.

Ok I will try this again

OMG,  I am feeling more stupid than a box of rocks.

I try to do this and I get no where, I click on the layer the shape is in.

Then I hit CTRL and then I click in the  shape layer again but all that happens is the layer lights up, not the shape does nothing,

    1. Activate the shape layer in the Layers Palette.

    2. Ctrl-click the shape layer. This selects the shape.

    NEXT

I do want an accurate charm for sure.

I actually mailed one of the charms to a person and they made the purple one.

I am not sure how accurate the red white swirl one is because it is just an example picture of what the charm can look like when an insert is inserted. Then there is clear acrylic that goes over the picture.

I didn't even know how to do that. She created it in a program called SCAL5.

    Here is another example

I hope I can figure this out cause I have these which I hope will be easier. They are oval that I want to do too.

I think the problem might be the Ctrl-click thing.

Here I have placed the shape on a new layer.

While holding down Ctrl key, click the Shape layer in the Layers palette. You should see the marching ants around the shape. This indicates that the shape is selected.

Perhaps you hit Ctrl but released it before clicking Layer 1.

Ok that kind of works, but when I delete it, it turns the background white. A screen shot here.

Here is one (of many ways) to create your template.

First create the blank white template.  Rename the Background layer to anything else. It is sufficient to double-click it in the layers palette and accept the default name Layer 0. The reason for doing this will be explained later.

Next, extract the shape from the jpg. Hopefully the shape is on a solid background which will make things easier.

Here I have a jpg leaf on white background. Select the shape using the various selection tools. In this case I used the Magic Wand (with the Contiguous option) to select the white background, then inverted the selection so that the leaf is now selected:

Copy the selection to the clipboard (Edit > Copy, or Ctrl-C)

Open the template and paste form the clipboard (Edit > Paste, or Ctrl-V).

This places the shape on a new layer:

Ctrl-click the layer to select the shape.

Activate the template layer and <Delete>. This creates the transparent shape in the template.

To create additional transparent shapes, activate the shape layer and use the Move tool to rotate/reposition/resize the shape as needed on the template and <Delete>.

Note that the reason we rename the Background layer is that when you delete something from the Background layer the deleted item is replaced not by transparency but by the current color in the background color chip in the toolbar

When you are finished delete the shape layer or turn off its visibility.

To place a picture within one of the transparent shapes, add it below the template layer. Rotate/reposition/resize the picture layer as needed to place in the shape:

If this is not what you are looking to do, please clarify.

Yes Mark that is what it looks like....I am going to give your directions a try.

The shape is really small.....11mm x 16mm but it is not a perfect rectangle, the long lines have slight arches on it.

It looks alot bigger here. So, how the template works is, I want to have a white or colored background and cut a bunch of these out on a sheet and then be able to insert designs behind the colored sheet so they show up in these cut outs.

The only difference I see Mark is that the shape you used is a shape that looks as if it came from the PSE selection, this would be a custom shape, do I have to install it into PSE first? And of course I need to have numerous of them.

It would help if you post the shape for us to look at in order to see the details. You can post via the "insert image" icon at the top of the reply box here on the forum page.
