Masking part of Color pic to B&W

I have color photo that I would like make part of it B&W and leave the rest color. I tried using masks but I can't seem to get it to work.

Try this using the Expert tab:

1. Open the picture file

2. Use one of the selection tools, e.g. lasso tool or selection brush, to select the area that will be B&W

3. Place the selection on its own layer - press CRL+J

4. Open a solid color fill adjustment layer above this. In the dialog that opens, be sure that black is selected

5. Group the top 2 layers - press CTRL+G

Try making a selection and put that selection in a new layer and then make that layer B&W.
