I have an old picture of my mon going back to 1938 or so. One side is badly damaged and I would like to replace that portion by selecting a picture and dragging it to the background of my mom.  I am using Photoshop, elements 2023.  Could some one explan how to do this or direct me to a video. Please use the following email.  deleted

Thank you

Even without your photos, I understand what you want.  The recipe you describe will work, although you leave some details out as to whether you can see both photos in floating documents in the Editor.  If not, there are other ways to have the two documents visible next to each other (go to the Window>Image menu and select Tile) or use the Photo Bin and have the background photo selected in the workspace area and click and drag the foreground image up to the visible document.

But, you can also have the two images open in the Photos Bin and use the Photomerge Compose Guided Edit from the Guided>Photomerge tab:

These are just some of the ways to perform the task.

It's not entirely clear to me what you want to do.  I don't think the portion of the photo you want to use to repair the photo of your mom is a suitable replacement.  The hair is an entirely different style and color and the position of the face is at a different angle with the hair hiding the side that you want to fix.

I think you are better off selecting portions of your mom's photo, creating a new layer, then reversing the layer(s) horizontally to recreate the missing portions.  You can also use the Clone Stamp tool to fill in some of the missing areas.  Here is a very quick and crude example of what is possible.

If you really want to use the other photo, for example because it is perhaps your mom's granddaugher, then I understand and we can give you more directions.

yes I know the pictures do not match; I am still looking for matching hair
but in the meantime, I'd like to learn how to do it. I'll send you an
example of what I did with a shot of my three brothers sitting on a bridge.

I found a background to replace the bridge and then cut my brothers out of
the main picture and placed them on the background.

I used the quick selection tool, then I surrounded my brothers with the
box feature, pressed (Crtl T) and selected the select box and dragged it
into the background and sized it and put it into position. I have not been
able to repeat this process since and need help to find out what steps I'm
missing.

Thank you Hatstead

I've tried to drop the pictures into this reply, however, the pictures fill the whole page and it won't let me send.

Please post  the damaged picture and the replacement. That way one can offer targeted suggestions.
