Question

Moving a selection while drawing using spacebar

In the full blown version of Photoshop, I used to be able to press the spacebar in order to move a selection while I'm drawing it.  Doing that now almost never works.

Sometimes I can move the selection about 5 pixels, then it freezes and I'm stuck.  Sometimes if I hit spacebar and move the selection quickly, it'll go a bit further, but it always stops and I have to depress the spacebar and try again.

Is this supposed to work in Elements?

  1. Open your file
  2. Make a selection of the object using one of the selection tools, e.g. lasso, selection brush
  3. Place object on its own layer (CTRL+J)
  4. Activate the Move tool and use the arrow keys on the keyboard to nudge the selection to where you want it.

Thanks for your answer.  I understand that this is a possible solution, but the goal of using the spacebar to drag while you're selecting is so that you can make an accurate selection while you're drawing.  It should work in 1 step, not 2.

You have identified a difference in the functionality between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. The latter is the consumer (less expensive) iteration of the software.

I would normally use the move tool or better still make the selection and Press Ctr+J to make a new layer. Select layer 1, choose the move tool and drag.

Sometimes content aware move does a reasonable job if you wish to move and blend. Select it below the crop tool or press the Q key. Then drag and click the green checkmark.
