Moving files and tags in PSE

Hello!  I would like to take all of my digital scrapbooking files off of my hard drive and put them into an external hard drive as I have sooo many files. Is there a way I can do this and still keep all of my tags for each item that I have saved?  I would keep the file system the same, just on an external hard drive.

    The Organizer - File - Move does that. It will ask you for a new drive and even crate a new directory all while keeping the Catalog pointed to the new location. (This is in PSE2018)

    (You can also export if you want to keep some originals on the internal HD but I am not sure how the Catalog would handle the same file in two locations or even if that is possible). MichelBParis is good with running multiple Catalogs which may come in useful, but as he points out having multiple Catalogs causes other issues. Stick with the Move comand.

    I have also taken to saving the metadata to files as a precaution against loosing the tags, which also makes them useful in other software.

    This move can also be done by selecting files and dragging them from the browsing space to the destination folder/drive in the left folders panel in tree mode.

    If you want to move a whole folders tree to another drive or master folder, you can use the drag and drop function within the folders panel. That keeps the folders hierarchy;

    But that works just like the explorer: that moves the folders without taking into consideration if there are other files moved than those in your catalog...  (There might be non media files, media files included in another catalog)

    If you move the folder tree from the explorer and immediately use the 'reconnect' function, that also works well for reasonable sized folder trees.

    Exporting is for creating copies  of files where you want without including the resulting files in the catalog. You can of course 'import' the resulting files manually in the catalog if you want. It's not a move, you keep the original and exported version; the files are not considered as duplicates in the catalog.
