Question

My ex HD has TWO letters assigned to it -- How to fix??? Michel, help PLEASE!

I’m using the trial version of PSE18.  It is working great!   Michel, thanks as always for your time and consideration.  I’ll get back to that one later.

Here is the problem that I have.  ALL 171 pics that I tossed in the recycle BIN via PSE18 stated that they came from a G drive.

Right now my external HD has two letters assigned to it.  And hence the confusion and the message from PSE18 when I tell it to delete from my catalog and my HD about ‘PSEcan’t delete from the HD because of blah, blah, blah.”  It is in the screen shot below for the proper wording.

On my PC tree – I noticed that my external HD is called Passport: (F) (G)

I have found a website that tells how to reassign a name to one’s drives.  I just don’t know what to letter to assign for it.

In PSE18, when checking the meta on a pic – it general tells me two things:

History:  Passport (F:)

Location:  G:Pictures

Then . . . my HP has a RECOVERY folder that it tells us not to touch.  And its letter?  F

Any thoughts?

My concern is any edits/stacks and such that I do . . . will most likely be in vain until I have all my drives assigned ONE LETTER ONLY.

Should I assign letters to the RECOVERY and to my EX HD and then just start the whole import process over again?!

Below are screen shots if that helps you understand my problem better.  Thanks a bunch!  Sincerely, Dean

PS:  I found a site that explains very well how to assign your drives different letters, I just don’t know what to assign them to.  I’ll make a few calls and do some reading tomorrow. Probably the safest and best course would be to get my DRIVES lettered correctly.   Uninstall PSE 18.   Reinstall PSE 18.  And then import from my ex hd – which well be newly lettered in a way NOT to be confused or combined with any other letters.  I wonder why PSE18 was working SO MUCH BETTER than PSE15?  Michel, I could not find the ‘acceleration’ thing.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Note to self:  when I am typing on my HP – the one and only USB port on the left side – reads the following (which is better that the two ports on the left that read NOTHING for my external HD – update – now one of my ports on the left side is reading my ex HD as F and G):

Look at the top of the above and also in the left pane how my external HD has two drive letters assigned to it – well that contradicts with the F drive that came with the HP laptop.

  1. OK.  Tis annoying message.  I think I figured out its cause.

Here is what I think is the problem.  Does it have a solution?  Note below that my external hard drive (this is from where I mported the pics into PSE last night) states that it is both F and G drive (lower bottom left – ‘Passport’). And I have discovered that the ones it lets me throw away throughly (out of the catalog and off of the EX HD are the ones with G drive stated as their location).

Above is my recyle bin.  Of 171 pics – when I hover the cursoor over them it states:  Orginal Location:  G:\Pictures

NONE: state F: drive and although I told it ICON view – only about 10 showed up in icon view

NOTE:  The pic belowin the upper right corner – look at the right pane in the metadata area. Location:  G drive -- After that, I’ll show the exact same pic but the metadata will be different.  And it will show the different drive:

Note the one below  (this is my recyle Bin– states G as orginal location – but, it has a string after that)

Below is a  better view of the recyle bin to show that they all list G as their location:

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

And the pattern just continues and continues with EVERYTHING that I put in the recycle bin via PSE 18 today.  Nothing from my F drive (remember my problem – my ex hd is called both F and G drive)

A continuation of the pattern:

Man . . .  I just can’t get a break.  Or, I guess a better way of looking at it is . . . . I sure am learning a lot!  And later when I use thumb-drives . .  .. I don’t want them to mess up my drive order/sequence.  Time to learn, learn.  UGH.  I’m going broke learning.  Thank you all.

Michel, Thank you so much as always.  I would have been done with the whole PSE stuff a year ago if it were not for your kindest and wisdom.

I have been up 24 hours STRAIGHT researching this topic. Have you read/seen the PSE18 reviews at Am*zon???  Very, very discouraging.  It makes me feel like all this work is for naught.  And, even when things are going well, I just feel like the 'other shoe' is going to drop, any minute.

At the site mentioned above -- PSE18 has these ratings:

5 equals 30% of the reviews

4 equals 7%

3 equals 6%

2 equals 14%

1 equals a WHOOPING 43% Many are calling for a product recall.  How can the MERCEDES of photo editing have such horribly shocking numbers?! If we add the % of the 5s and 4s we get a measly 37%.  And if we add the ones and twos together, we get 57%.  How can these type numbers be acceptable to ADOBE?! It makes me feel like why bother?!

I have had so many problems in the past, what makes me think that things will go better in the future with PSE?!  Its it really being a good steward of my time, talents and limited resource to try and become competent in something that so many have failed at?

I wonder if I should 'stop the madness' and carry on with Aff*nty? I have quite the PSE library of books and DVDs and time spent on this forum.  And it has not gotten me very far at all.  I feel like I am going down on the Titanic . .. . month after month.

. .  . but then I just get back in line and buy another ticket to once again ride on that big, big ship. . .

So, is PSE 15 a NO-GO for me, since the trial version of PSE18 is (at the moment) working well?  So, I am out that initial 80 bucks.  So, possibly sink more money and buy PSE 18?!  To me, that seems like madness.

So, they are really millions of satisfied PSE customers around the world?  Have you personally been quite happy with the performance and learning curve of PSE yourself?

Sometimes I think . . . .install a NEW COPY of Windows 10.  I found one the other night for just 30 bucks.  A legit copy.  Then, reinstall 15 on that.  That maybe with a fresh, new reinstall of Windows 10 . . . that PSE 15 would still be a bunch of bugs for me...  I guess at that time, I could say, "I have given PSE 15 all the time and resources I can.  Aff*nity . . . it is now your turn . ." . .and start the whole learning curve over?

I do have a copy of Aff*nity.  BUT, due to your help/kindness . . . .and Adobe's reputation . . . I continue to push on with PSE. A new copy of Windows will cost me less than a copy of PSE18 but at the MOMENT . . . PSE18 is running great . . . .but again . . . .it is that feeling of waiting for the next shoe to drop . . . and feeling like the biggest idiot in the world when/if it does.

Your thoughts? I have been up 24 hours straight studying, thinking about this . .. . time to try to get some sleep.  I don't know if you work for Adobe and therefore cannot speak freely on this post . . . if that is the case, and you would like to address me frankly on this - I think you know my email.  If not, here it is:  xxxxxxxxxxxxx@xxx.xxx.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.  I'm quite discouraged.  This was to be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby for when I become disabled . . . I am sad to report that it has been anything but that. If you have a few good game plans going forward with my 'enjoyable hobby' (sic) . . . I'd love hearing them.

Thank you very much,

Dean

PS:  Part of my investments for a 'relaxing hobby' when I become disabled was a $600 laptop with more than enough RAM to run PSE (16 GB) and enough memory (900 GB).  Then about one grand for a Sony A6000 and accessories (zoom lens, high dollar tripod, etc) all of this things purchased on a limited, fixed income and the gifting of my mother . . .  make the pain of it (PSE) not working, all that more painful . . . .   Sorry for the soap opera . . . I'll feel better after some sleep . . .

No, like other ACPs or MVPs in this forum, I don't work for Adobe. I am not even a moderator. Staff members posting here show the Adobe staff badge. So I feel free to express myself except for 'NDA' (non disclosure agreements) in rare cases where ACPs or MVPs are given inside information not ready to be made public.

Please, avoid giving your mail in a public forum; it's against the forum rules and mainly to protect yourself against receiving a lot of spam.

It's easy and natural to use the 'private messaging' feature of this forum for more personal exchanges. It's in your inbox dialog, the @ icon just left of your avatar in the top menu. It's your choice. For technical issues that might be of interest for other users, I prefer using the forum, even if that implies being critical with either Adobe or the other users.

You have done a serious search about the letter drives assignation in Windows. Good.

How does Windows assign drive letters?

When you plug in a drive or other device (card reader, thumb stick ...) for the first time, it searches for the lowest available letter, starting with D, E, F and so on. You may have a letter assigned to a DVD reader, a safety HP partition.

If you unplug your external HD drive, the letter is available for another device. If you plug in the external drive after that, it will get the next available letter. And that should fool the catalog which still holds the previous letter.

How to prevent this problem?

The Windows options allow you to assign a new letter (which will be remembered next time).

It is common practice to assign letters farther off from C, for instance L,M,N... No confusion when other devices are plugged in. So it's best to assign a new letter before storing anything in it.

How does the Organizer manage the letters in Windows?

On account of the risk described above, the organizer database was changed (maybe in PSE6 ?) to recognize the drive by two criteria:

- the drive letter

- the internal serial number of the drive.

So, theroretically, the organizer should find the right device even if the letter is wrong. I think the solution is not totally foolproof, especially with ulterior backups and restore.

Now, in your case, two questions:

- does the organizer open your files even if it shows the wrong letter?

- Does the external drive contain the whole library, or just a small part of it?
