older photoshop elements verison deactivated without my consent

I used Photoshop elements 12 and it was apparently deactivated by Adobe, which instead of starting the app run an advertisement for an update.

However, I am still using the same PC that I used at the time of purchase of elements 12 and there is no reason for me to update the program. Can Adobe legally deactivate my older version?
