Options not available for PNG file

I am using Elements 19.

I've been enlarging images (mostly jpg and mostly business logos with logos) using first Image Size with the Bicubic Smoother option, then Enhance > Adjust Sharpness. This has worked very well to provide clean lines/text on images to be displayed on a very large screen.

However, I have an original that is in a png format. Neither the Bicubic Smoother or the Adjust Sharpness option is available (they're grayed out).

I tried converting that image to jpg, then doing the enlarge & sharpen steps, but had the same results. Does anyone know why this is happening, and more importantly, an alternate way to achieve similar results? This particular original image is in more need of "sharpening" that most I'm working on!

Thanks to you both.

As I said in my original post, the specific image I'm having trouble with is in PNG format.

I have not had the same issue when starting with a jpg file, so it's not the color settings or any of the other generic suggestions in Glenn's post.

I have resolved the problem by simply displaying the image in Windows Photos, doing a screen grab and saving that as a jpg. Not elegant, but I've moved on.

Look under Image>Mode and if either Bitmap or Indexed Color is checked, then neither Enhance>Adjust Sharpness or Image>Resize>Image Size>Bicubic Smoother will be available.

It would really help if you could post a screenshot like what you see below.  Make sure we can see the entire program.
My screenshot is from pse 2024, windows 10 OS.

I suspect your image you are having problems with is a bmp- or another format the pse cannot understand.
Please let us know what version of Photoshop Elements you are using.

The follwing is what  the "copilot" in ms edge comes up with.  Copilot uses AI to come up with answers.

Certainly! When the Adjust Sharpness option is grayed out in Photoshop Elements, it can be due to a few reasons. Let’s troubleshoot:

  1. Image Mode:

    • Ensure that your image is in RGB mode. If it’s in grayscale or another mode, some adjustments may be unavailable.
    • To convert your image to RGB:
      • Go to Image > Mode and select RGB Color.
      • Stay in RGB even if your images are black and white.
  2. File Format:

    • If your image is in JPEG format, try converting it to TIFF or another format.
    • Sometimes JPEG files have limitations on certain adjustments.
  3. Bit Depth:

    • Check if your image is 8-bit or 16-bit.
    • If it’s 16-bit, try changing it to 8-bit using Image > Mode.
  4. Scanner Settings (if applicable):

    • If you scanned the image, review the settings in your scanning software.
    • Some adjustments may behave differently based on the original scan format (JPEG, TIFF, etc.).
  5. Haze Removal Specifics:

    • The Haze Removal command should be available in 16-bit mode.
    • If you’re working with old black-and-white photos, ensure they are in RGB mode.

Remember, Photoshop Elements can be picky about image settings, but with a little tweaking, you’ll conquer those grayed-out options! 📷✨
