In Organizer - there are three categories - People, Places and Events - why isn't there a category for Things?

I have lots of things - homes, plants, furniture, lakes, mountains etc.

No, there are four: you forgot the most important one 'Media'. That's the fully customizable way to create categories and subcategories freely. That's the solution used since the start of the organizer.

People, Places and events are special categories created to work with geotagging and face recognition. I don't use any of those, I have created my own ones, Myplaces, mypeople, myevents... and a lot of others.

    homes, plants, furniture, lakes, mountains

    just try with those.
