Organizer Not Working?

I just purchased Elements.  Why does the organizer look like this?  It was 'scanning for media' for hours until I stopped it.

Where are the actual files on your disk? In the folder tree you have a folder named pictures and another named photos. If you double-click on a thumbnail with a question mark does it open full-screen. If you select a thumbnail with a question mark and click the Editor button at the bottom does the image open in the editor app or do you get a missing file message?
