Painterly edit not working

I have used this edit before but now it is not working and I cannot tell what has changed.
After I select "Paint Brush", the photo is covered with the semi-transparent film, but when I stamp the pattern on the photo, it does not "show" the photo.  The semi-transparent film remains.  I have tried different brushes, sizes, and transparencies, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

Correct answer Greg_S.

Any changes you have made to preferences will be lost.  You should not lose your NIK plug-ins (unless you have possibly added a plug-in folder in preferences).  There should be no unrecoverable consequence.  Essentially, the reset puts the program into its "out of the box" condition.

Thanks Greg S.; it worked. I had seen the "fix" but was nervous about
resetting. Thanks for setting my mind at ease and fixing the problem too.

Try resetting the preferences file. Go to Edit>Preferences>General tab and click the Reset Preferences on next launch button.

It says that if I do that, it "cannot be undone". Will I lose my Nik plug in? Any other negative consequences of performing this action that I should be awar of?

Further info...I can choose the canvas color and if I want a texture, but cannot get the photo to show through the transparent film when I stamp the brush pattern on it.
