Question

Photo grid does not display at all

I have Photoshop Elements 12, running on iMac OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6.

I tried to import about 400 photos from my Sony RX-100. These included jpeg, RAW (Sony ARW format) and two short videos. Towards the end of the process, the message was displayed “Import failed”. At this point, the entire photo grid disappeared and I have not been able to make it appear since then. All I see when I launch the Organiser is the menu bar with the menu options (File, Edit, Find, View, Help). I also see the backup reminder. The photo grid is entirely absent.

I have tried:

1. Closing and re-opening Elements.

2. Shutting down and re-starting the iMac.

3. Re-importing the same files.

4. Importing different files.

5. In Catalogue Manager, switching to another catalogue and back to the original catalogue.

What can I do to make the photo grid appear?

From the Organizer menu go to:

Help >> System Info

Find the file path to your catalog e.g.

Users/99jon/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/My Catalog

Substitute your own user name for 99jon and navigate to My Catalog or whatever your catalog is named.

Quit Elements Organizer and open your named catalog folder and you should find a file thumb.5.cache

Rename the file to thumb.5-old.cache and quit Finder

Re-launch Organizer and wait for the thumbnail database to re-build. If you have a large catalog it may take quite a while.

Thanks for your reply Jon. I have rebuilt the thumbnail database as you described, but it hasn't solved the problem. I still cannot see the photo grid at all.

Just to clarify what is happening: the problem is not that I don't have any photos in the grid, but the entire grid itself does not appear. All I can see is the menu bar. As an analogy, it's as if all the windows in Safari had been closed, just leaving the menu bar - in which case you'd just use cmd N to open a new window, but there is no cmd N to open a new photo grid in Elements.

Any other ideas?

Check your display settings from the menu

View >> Media Types

Ensure all are checked

Then go to View >> Hidden Files >> Show ALL
