Question

Photos are randomly multiplying.

I am using PSE 15 and recently, the photos in my catalog started multiplying.  It's not consistent, some have two copies, some three, some four or five or six all with the same name.  Some times they come up with the variant name where it has a hyphen and number after the file name.  I verified that it is set to "Copy new files only (Ignore Already Imported Files)" but they seem to continue to multiply.  I just purchased PSE 2018 but don't want to install it until I get this under control.  Any idea as to why they are randomly multiplying?

PSE would not create files by itself. Are you using the auto-fix or smart fix settings? That will create an edited copy in a version set next to the original. Also in the Editor when using the menu:

    File >> Save As

There is a check-mark option to save the new copy in a version set.

We are not using auto-fix or smart fix and they are not edited versions.  If the photos were edited, the name would reflect the fact that it was edited.  The names are the same on the multiplied photos.  If you save it in a version set, the name shows that it was edited and that it's a variation of the original.  If you don't save it in a version set, it overwrites the original and there is still only one file/photo.  This does not seem to be the cause for why photos are multiplying.

Are the duplicates in the same folder?

Can you post a screenshot of Organizer showing the problem.
