Only the current Photoshop Elements 2018 can open the NEF files of your D7500.

If you don't want to pay for the new version, download the free DNGconverter mentioned in that paper.

That independent software (not a plugin) can batch convert a whole folder of your NEF files to the universal DNG raw format that PSE14 can run and edit. An additional step, but free for the same quality.
