Photoshop Elements

I edited photos on my Mac using Elements. They were saved as .psd files. Now, when I try to open them, I get an error message saying photoshop cant open files, doesn't recognize format. Does anyone know of a fix for this or should I just reinstall photoshop?

    Which version of PSE are you working on?

    Did you purchase it from App Store?

    It is Adobe photoshop elements 12 editor. I did purchase it from the App Store.

    Please help because I love using the program.
