Photoshop Elements 12 Editor – Could not complete your request because of a program error.

I recently rebuilt my Windows 10 (Version 1607) computer with a new SSD and am now receiving the apparently common “Photoshop Elements 12 Editor – Could not complete your request because of a program error.” popup.  I’ve run all the updates on PSE12 and the raw app that are available, and it is now at version 12.1 (20140303.12.1.49334).  The error appears after opening .CR2 files and working on them in the “Camera Raw 8.5” editor, and then clicking the “Open Image” button. The error also seems to cause the .XMP sidecar file to not be created, resulting in all edits to be lost.  I haven’t figured out exactly how to cause the error, but it seems to be much more likely to happen if I spend some time working on the image, as opposed to just opening the .CR2 and then immediately hitting the “Open Image” button.

I’ve reinstalled PSE12 twice now, rebooted, made sure the OS itself is fully updated, as well as combed the event viewer (no corresponding events to these errors), and am stumped.  I process a lot of images and this has pretty much put all of my work on hold.  I’d really appreciate any help.

Well, I committed the cardinal sin of troubleshooting by making two changes at the same time, but seem to have fixed the problem.  I just processed an entire set of photos without experiencing the issue.

Change #1

Video Card Driver Updates:

I went to AMD's site and let it auto-detect my video card drivers, rather than relying on the drivers from Windows Update.  While Windows Update did detect my video card, AMD's site had a newer version available.

PSE12 Changes

I click both of the buttons below.

Edit -> Preferences -> General -> "Reset Preferences on next launch" & "Reset All Warning Dialogs"

I'll leave this post up until I have another set of photos to process and if it's still clear after that, mark it as resolved.

I've since processed a couple of albums since the changes above, and have not seen the error again.  My gut says it was the official drivers from the provider's site.
