Photoshop Elements 13 problem

I use paintbucket to insert a darkened background. It usually just takes a couple of clicks to make a uniform color background. One day I changesd msoforeground image. me of the settings and now it no longer works that way - I lose parts of the foreground image. Are ther default settings for paintbucket?  Thanks for any assistance
