Photoshop Elements 15 "get photos" problem

My pictures have been successfully downloaded from my camera to the hard drive of my PC.  They are clearly visible when I check the contents of my folders via the computer's folder icon.  However, when I try to "get photos" from the Photoshop Elements menu and go to look in the contents of the folder, they are not visible and have not been imported to my media for the program.  What is wrong?
