Photoshop Elements 2023, 2024 batch processing no longer recognizes file extension .xmp

First noticed on Oct 15,  batch processing in Photoshop Elements 2023 no longer uses the settings stored in the .xmp files.

It applies the same default to all the files.

The error log shows:

File: "... \DSC_6240.xmp"
Error: Could not complete your request because Photoshop Elements cannot recognize the file extension. (-25600)

I tried backing  out the operating system to a restore point before this started,

and uninstalling the latest windows updates, but it didn't help.

I uninstalled and reinstalled elements, it didn't help.

I uninstalled 2023 and installed a trial version of 2024, it didn't help.

So I have another Windows 10 system, an old HP Laptop that I rarely use.

I usually turn it on once a month to get the MS Patch Tuesday Windows Updates.

So I turned it on, and found it had the same Elements batch processing problem!

So I did the following:

Disabled Windows updates for 7 days.

Uninstalled Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Did a full repair install over the operating system, keeping applications and user files.

Reinstalled Photoshop Elements 2023.

And it still has the problem!

What version of Windows are you using?

Can you post a screenshot of the File>Process Multiple Files settings your using?
