Question

Photoshop Elements 2026 will not start (Windows 11)

Hello,
I purchased Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2026 about a month ago and have been using Photoshop Elements (PSE) without any problems until now.  Two days ago I hit the problem where PSE would not start. On double clicking the shortcut, I could see an entry for it appear in the background processes in Task Manager, but it would not open. There were no recent Win11 updates in this period.

Some quick research revealed many suggestions on the web, in various forums (including this one) and several YouTube videos. Some of these related to earlier versions of PSE, going back to 2019.

I tried some of the suggestions, with little success, but eventually managed to fix the problem by setting the properties of the .exe to run in Windows 8 compatibility mode.  But it didn't make sense to me that it had been working OK in Win11 native mode prior to this. So the next day as an experiment I turned off the compatibility mode option, and, as I suspected, PE opened normally again.
Therefore I'm none the wiser as to the cause of the initial problem.

Although it appears to be working OK for the time being, I'm not confident that the problem won't recur at a later date.

So, my question to this forum is:
-- Is there an identified cause and definitive solution to this problem ?

I am appalled that such a fundamental problem as the program failing to open has been around for years, across so many versions of PE.  I previously used PSE15 for many years without encountering this.

I would appreciate any feedback you can provide on the cause + official solution for this.
At the moment my confidence for the long-term reliability of PSE 2026 has taken a serious hit.

Many thanks in advance.

Have you always had sufficient free hard drive space?

Thanks for the suggestion.  My Windows (C) partition has over 350 GB free, so I don't think disk space is the problem.

Some posts in the past have mentioned a possible corrupted preferences file.   Have you (or anyone else) come across this as a cause?
