Photoshop elements charcoal filter

Please help, I'm not sure what I did but for some reason when I go to apply my charcoal filter it is solid black with white sketching instead of the white background and light blacks and grey for sketch.  I was trying different ways to get a sketch effect not using the filter and some how must have mistakenly changed the setting.  Any help would be so very much appreciated.
