Photoshop Elements wont open some jpg or jpeg files

I have photoshop elements 2018 but I find that there are some jpg or jpeg files that it wont open. In organiser they just show as an envelope. When I say open with editor I get the error message that the file may be truncated or corrupt. But if I use any other viewing app or editor the files open fine. Has anyone seen this problem and what is the fix please?

Hi,

Sorry to butt in on this thread but have you tried viewing one of the troublesome pictures using Irfanview?

IrfanView - Official Homepage - One of the Most Popular Viewers Worldwide

I downloaded an image from the net and had problems getting it into PSE. When I opened the file using irfanview it also reported an error.

It might give a clue as to your problem.

If you can open it, try saving it to a different file and then see if that opens in PSE

@steveb523, clearly the .png files were not created by the iPhone natively.  And you really can't tell whether the files were transferred from one phone to another as exact copies.  Probably the only way the original gets transferred is via AirDrop.  If they are transferred via another application, the process seems to involve non-compliant jpeg files.   Even transferring via text message will probably result in a compression of the jpeg files.  You note that the non-compliant files have a JPEG extension.  That should not make any difference.

Many programs can handle non-compliant jpgs and generally all one needs to do is a Save As to make the files compliant.   Even Windows Photo app will do it.  I'm glad you have found a solution with a reasonable workflow.

@steveb523 are the problem files possibly those that have been sent to you in another phone app such as WhatsApp or Messenger?  The problem is that many phone apps do not use a fully compliant format.

Are you able to open the problem files in the Editor?   If so, you may be able to use the Editor's File>Process Multiple Files feature to batch convert the non-compliant jpegs and png files to compliant ones that can be recognized by the Organizer.

I’m not sure I can definitively say for certain that all of the photos came from an iPhone or which iPhone. So far, I’ve had bunches of files from 2020, 2021, and 2022 that aren’t recognized, which means they’d be from three most recent iPhone models running progressively newer versions of iOS. I also receive photos from at least four other people, all running different models but usually running the current version of iOS at the time. So IF they all came from iPhones, they’d be possibly from seven different models running several different versions of iOS, whatever was current.

None of the JPEG or PNG files that won’t open in Organizer also won’t open with Photoshop Elements. Interestingly, however, in the open files dialog box, ALL of the files have thumbnails that appear properly, and all show up properly in the preview pane. That’s true for both Organizer and PSE. It seems weird to me that, for example, PSE’s open dialog window handles all of the problem files properly and displays thumbnails and previews, but then the application itself says it can’t parse the files.

As I said in my previous post, Affinity Photos will open ALL of the files, and then each can be exported as a .jpg file which Organizer then can recognize. I was doing that manually one file at a time until I ran into a folder that had about 300 bad files in it. At that point, I fiddled around with the batch files utility in Affinity - and boy, did that make a difference. That utility is blindingly fast.

So, I select a folder and drag all of the files in that folder to Organizer and drop them there. Organizer fails to recognize some and doesn’t duplicate good files that were already there. So nothing gets added to Organizer at that point, but it gives me a list of why each file was not imported (duplicate or didn’t recognize).

Then I start a batch conversion in Affinity, and using Organizers list, I drag the unrecognized files from the folder where they’re stored into Affinity. Once they’re all there (the limit seems to be somewhere around 100 files, I tell the batch converter to store the results as jpg’s into the same folder they came from. Affinity doesn’t just overwrite the bad files; the bad ones have a JPEG file extension while Affinity writes files with a jpg extension.

That unfortunately means the old JPEG files need to be deleted manually in Explorer. But if the files are sorted by name, the good and bad files are next to each other, and if I’m careful, the bad o es are already selected from when I selected them to copy to the batch process.

Then, I drag and drop all of the files onto Organizer, and this time the duplicates are ignored but the good files are imported. If I missed converting any of the files, they show up at this point.

I have the same problem also. Some JPEG, PNG, and MOV files can't be recognized by elements organizer. That seems to have happened after I upgraded from the 2019 version to the 2024 version. If I have multiple files in a Windows 11 folder And dragged the contents of the folder onto organizer, some files are recognized and some aren't. It may recognize half of the JPEG files but not the other half. The same is true for movies and PNG files

I can get around the problem by opening the files that organizer doesn't recognize in a different editor (I use affinity photos), immediately exported as the JPEG file making no changes, and organizer recognizes it. Right now, I'm having to make a list of the files that won't open, open them in affinity save them back out, and then move them into organizer. As you might imagine, this is a slow process, and I am trying to import four years worth of photos primarily from my iPhone I'm guessing maybe 80% are recognized and 20% are not. That's a lot of files. I've done the same thing for years, and I never had this problem using previous versions of organizer. It sure seems to me if other editors will open the files with no problem, then so should organizer.

I made a collage using PhotoShop Elements 2021.  I saved it as a JPG and tried to use Photoshoip Organizer to print two 5"x7" photos on on sheet.  But Organzier gives me the "broken file" icon for the JPG.  The pictures in the collage all camed from my iPhone and were downloaded to a local drive.

I've seen nothing in this thread to address a JPG that's created by and easily opens in PhotoShop but nor in Organizer.  Any thoughts?

P.S.  I can print the collage from PhotoShop.  Just can't see the thumbnail or print using Organizer.

Found the answer to my issue.

In PhtotShop, I resized the image from 5"x7" to 3"x4.2" (kept the ratio the same).  WHOOP PING...Organizer gave me a good thumbnail and I was able to print the two 5x7 per page I wanted to.

am having same troubles with Photoshop elements 2019 ... I took one 'unsupported photo' as an example ... I can see it in Editor just fine ... I can adjust it, edit it, make all the software adjustments I want ... it shows in Organizer as 'edit it progress' ... but still can't use it functionally in Organizer?

So those are not the same troubles.

The 'unsupported' photos mentioned above can't be opened in the Editor.

it shows in Organizer as 'edit it progress' ... but still can't use it functionally in Organizer?

I don't understand?

well, color me confused ... I can confirm that the same photo that is viewable/manipulatable in Editor ... is unavailable/'unsupported' in Organizer?

I too have the same problem. While this is a nice workaround I still expect Photoshop Elements to be able to open the same images that all other image programs can.

I have quite a few images that were transferred from an Android phone and most of them won't be opened by photoshop elements (18).

All the images that are a problem were transferred to my android phone from friends via the Facebook Messenger app and later copied in to my photshop catalog through simple file copy.

I can upload the images to google photos and view them, there's also no problem viewing them in the photo app in Windows 10. Paint.net, Picasa and Windows Paint3D also works fine.

Really frustrating and not something I expect from a product I've bought.

I have the same issue. Images transferred from my Samsung Tablet show up as broken thumbnails. Other programs open them OK. If I open them in Irfanview and save them, refresh the thumbnail in Elements15, I can now see the thumbnail and open it in the Elements photo editor.
