Question

Place Tags added and applied but disappear when catalog is reopened

I have created place tags (using the Google Maps functionality) for a number of places in Canada. I'll use Vancouver as an example. I create the place tag, and it appears in the tree as Canada>BC>Vancouver. (I am satisfied that it is only the city and not a specific location in this case.) I apply the place tag to photos, and, when I examine the photos, the tags are correctly applied. I can also search using the "Vancouver" tag and the "BC" tag, and the "Canada" tag successfully. When I close Photoshop Elements  Organizer and then reopen the catalog, only the "Canada" tag remains. I do not seem to have this particular issue with US locations. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a limit to the number of place tags that can be created or some other limitation that  I can't figure out.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

    Hi,

There is no limitation to the number of tags which can be created. Can you specify the workflow you perform when you create place tag and apply it to images? You can also verify the tags created in the Tags panel of Media tab and Pinned view of Places tab where you can see the images on the map.

    Thanks

I create the Place tag on the Media page by clicking on the + next the Place Tags heading in the Tags window. I search the location on the Google Map screen when that pops up. As a rule, I have not typed an exact Google Maps location (for example, I might type Vancouver, BC), so Google Maps throws out possible options (in this case, I get Vancouver, BC, Canada). I click on the Google Maps suggestion that most closely matches what I'm looking for. Google Maps displays a location pin and an Assign Here (check mark or Not) bubble. I choose the check mark and click Done at the bottom of the Google Maps display.

At this point, my Place Tags list shows Canada>British Columbia>Vancouver. I then assign the tag Vancouver to my selected pictures by dragging and dropping the Vancouver Place Tag on the pictures. At this point, when I look at the pictures individually, I see a Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada tag on each picture. When I go to all media and search for Vancouver by clicking in the box next to Vancouver (binoculars display), the pictures that were tagged as Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada appear. All the pictures are present and no additional pictures are displayed.

At this point, I close Organizer and re-open it. When I look  at the Tags window under Place Tags, Vancouver and British Columbia are no longer displayed. Only Canada is displayed. When I look at the individual pictures that were previously tagged Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, they are now tagged only Canada.

I've been through this process several times with identical results. I have also optimized and repaired my catalog in hopes that this would correct the problem. I have also created a new place tag, assigned it to a picture, searched it successfully, close Organizer, re-opened it, found that the place tag still existed, and used it to search out the pictures it was assigned to. Everything on the new tag went fine - only difference was, it was a US location. I have tried creating a place in the Places tab. It seems to work OK but it wants to apply the tag to all the pictures in the Unpinned filter unless I select specific ones. Other than that, same results.

    I am really stumped.

Can you please try if this is happening with a new catalog?
