Problem Erasing a Layer

When I erased a portion of a layer and expected it to go transparent, revealing the layer beneath. Instead the erased portion went white.  What am I doing wrong?

How I resolved my problem:  Having gotten a clue from another post, I clicked on the little padlock & Checkered square icon at the right end of the active layer stripe in the Layers Panel.  This little icon denotes that "the layer is partially blocked."   Clicking on this icon removed it and unlocked the layer, allowing me to erase to transparency.  Eureka!  Yippee!

Sounds like you had the transparent pixels locked.    I lock transparent pixels all the time to focus an effect.

What version of Photoshop Elements and operating system are you using?

Can you post a screenshot that includes the Layers panel and image?
