Problem Installing Plugin In PSE 2024

I have upgraded to a Win 11 PC and have reinstalled PSE 2024. I copied and pasted all the plugins from my old PC to the plugin folder of PSE 2024.

I tried to launch the "Beauty Pilot" plugin and got some kind of error message. I forgot what it said.  So I decided to remove the .8bf plugin, reboot and put it back again. In the meantime, I installed the beauty pilot software and registered it.

However, the "Beauty Pilot" plugin still refuses to show  up under the filter menu of PSE 2024.

The 32 bit plugin works fine in PSE 10 installed on the same PC

Also the 64 bit plugin works fine in PSE 2020  installed on the same PC

The same 64 bit plugin is invisible in PSE 2024.

In PSE 2024, I checked Help/System info.

Optional and third party plug-ins: It's not showing there

Plug-ins that failed to load: NONE

I reset PSE preferences. That did not help

I reinstalled PSE 2024. The plugin is still invisible and does not show up.

It is as if PSE 2024 has quarantined it. And yes, I did check to see if Windows has quarantined the file and it has not.

But I can clearly see the plugin in the PSE 2024 pugins folder!

Is there anything else I can try to get this plugin to work? Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Chris

Correct answer Chrisn N

Thank you Greg for your reply.

I finally got the "Beauty Pilot" plugin to work in PSE 2024. In the past, I had a problem with the "Focus Magic" plugin not showing in PSE 2024, and their support team told me what to do. I used a similar procedure to get "Beauty Pilot" to work.

As I suspected, PSE 2024 had "quarantined" or "deactivated" it.  It was inside the default plug in folder but did not show up under the filter list or show as failing to load under Help/System Info.

Here was the fix that worked.

1- Close PSE 2024. Open the registry Editor. (Win+R, type "Regedit") I searched for "Beauty Pilot". (On Registry Editor go to Edit/Find)

I found the registry key:

Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2325980870-2241792940-508029287-1001\Software\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\24.0\common\settings\ThirdParty Plugins

(This exact path may be different for different computers.)

2- Look for Registry entries that say "Crash Count".  All plugins with a "crash count" of 0 are loading correctly. All plugins with a, "crash count" of 1 or greater are not loading correctly.

3. I double clicked on the entry that said "Beauty pilot crash count 4" and changed the value to 0. Press OK.

4. I closed the registry editor, uninstalled Beauty Pilot, reinstalled and rebooted. I made sure the correct Beauty Pilot 64 bit plugin was in the default plugin location:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2024\Plug-ins

I Opened PSE 2024 and under the filters menu I could see the Two Pilots Folder/Beauty Pilot. I tested the plugin and it works fine.

I believe this basic method may work on any  other plugin that fails to show up in the filter list.

I hope this information will be helpful to someone else who experiences similar problems with other plugins.

Kind regards

Chris

PS I tried to upload a screenshot of the registry editor but It would not upload. Here is a Dropbox link:

I have never heard of Elements being the cause of a plug-in not installing.  As you obviously know, if a plug-in won't work with the program, it will be listed as unable to load in the System Info dialog.

What do you think has quarantined the plug-in?  Are you talking about an anti-virus program blocking the plug-in?  I am only familiar with how to deal with Norton.  What AV program are you talking about?  If you think Windows Defender has blocked the program go to the Security tab in Windows Settings and I expect you will find a solution there.

Thanks for your reply Greg. The 64 bit plugin works fine on PSE 2020. So I am sure Windows defender or windows firewall is not involved. I also checked Windows Defender and it is not listed as quarantined.

My feeling is that PSE 2024 has "quarantined" or "disabled" it.  If the plugin was not compatible, then, logically it would show in the list of plugins that failed to load. But it is not listed there.  So I believe PSE 2024 has "disabled" it.  It's just a hunch. The first time I tried to run the plugin it was in the filter list and I got an error message. Regretfully, I forgot to take a snapshot. Later it disappeared from the filter list.

Kind regards

Chris

I just Googled the plug-in.  Here are the instructions for installing it in Elements.  This appears to be a very old plug-in and the instructions are for Elements 5.  You can use a supplementary plug-in folder under the Edit>Preferences>Plug-ins dialog in more recent versions.  I also imagine that the tools available in more recent versions of Elements are superior to the plug-in.  For example, take a look at the Perfect Portrait Guided Edit.

Thanks Greg. Yes, I uninstalled Beauty Pilot and reinstalled, registered and rebooted. I also placed the 64 bit plugin in an additional plug in folder. Still no joy. It works fine in PSE 2020 but not in PSE 2024. In the meantime, I have sent a message to the developer's support.

It's true that I can live without it as there are now more advanced tools available.. What confuses me is that PSE 2024 recognises all my older 64 bit plugins but not this one. PSE 2024 is not even attempting to load it. I would like to solve this mystery.

Kind regards

Chris

Simply copying the plugin file to a plugin folder may not be sufficient.  Presumably, you originally used an installer for the plug-in with an earlier version of Elements.  You may need to try that again.  If that doesn't work, I suggest you contact the plug-in's publisher.
