Problem loading original File for editing in Elements 2018

I have been using Elements since version 2, I am now on Elements 2018, My operating system is Windows 10 (64)

Previously I drastically edited a photo of a swallow in flight I am not sure whether I opened it in ACR or Elements Editor.

I kept a copy of the original.

I am now, 6 months later, am not happy with my original edit and want to start from scratch, however.:

when I attempt to open the file in ACR from the original un-edited file it opens in an edited version.

If I Import the original file into Organizer, the catalog thumbnail shows the correct original version.

If I then import this file from Organizer into the Elements Editor it imports as the edited version.

I tried removing the original and all other images taken of the swallows from the catalog and reimporting only the original un-edited file directly into ACR

Again it imported an edited version

I tried to import only the original back into Organizer, it displayed as the original but, again, when I imported it into the Editor it came up as the same edited version.

I then copied the files from the computer to a flash drive and deleted all the files from my computer.

I then re-imported just the original un-edited file.....using the same techniques as before, I got the same results.

I had renamed the edited versions of the file as I saved them after editing....-DSC3201SwallowPZ.jpg ( after alplying Franzis Sharpen and Zoom )...._DSC 3201 original 3 .jpg.......etc. I also save a _DSC original 3.psd.

Seeing that I have removed all the files from my computer ( except from the Recycle bin ) and then brought back only the original, I can't make any sense of this.

I really want to start from scratch using the original camera file, any ideas.

Could you provide a screenshot showing your camera raw preferences and your settings, like this?

How do you know if the edits have been applied? Could you give more details?

when I attempt to open the file in ACR from the original un-edited file it opens in an edited version.

Can you confirm that the images can't have been edited in another converting software? The parametric edits are saved in the metadata header of jpeg or psd files, not in xmp files. If you have heavily edited the image in ACR, you should be able to display the original without the edits by choosing 'As shot' for white balance and 'default'. The edits are non-destructive. You should not even need to have an original copy to display either the original (As shot) or the edited version (custom).

I am not sure what you mean with "Can you confirm that the images can't have been edited in another converting software?" The photo was edited in ACR and may have been run through Franzis De-Noise.

What is the path to Camera Raw Preferences.

I attach a revised and amplified version of my original request:

Previously I drastically edited a photo of a swallow in flight I am not sure whether I opened it in ACR or Elements Editor.

I kept a jpg. copy of the original. I also have .psd copy of the edited version after drastic cropping and some editing in ACR.

6 months later, I am not happy with my original edit and want to start from scratch, however.:

when I attempt to open the file in ACR from the original un-edited file it opens in an edited version.

If I Import the original file into Organizer, the catalog thumbnail shows the correct original version and when I display it full view it also shows the uncropped full version.

If I then import this file from Organizer into the Elements Editor it imports as the edited cropped version.

I tried removing the original and all other images taken of the swallows from the catalog and reimporting only the original un-edited file directly into ACR

Again it imported an edited version

I'll try to concentrate on the mystery about how an original jpeg can show an edited version.

I also had a look at your previous post:

Remove ACR edits to start again.

What is the path to Camera Raw Preferences.

It's the seventh icon (3 horizontal bars on the top menu bar).

When you open a jpeg in the ACR module and use either the button 'Done' or 'Open', your settings are only saved in the metadata header of the jpeg files, not in a xmp sidecar file. The pixel data are not changed and will be ignored by any third party editor or browser.

If you re-open the file in the organizer or the editor, it will automaticall open in the ACR module with the settings applied, including cropping in your case.

    To restore the initial state:

    - click on the crop tool to display the original image (click outside of the image to remove the crop).

    - click on 'As shot' for the white balance

    - click on 'default' to remove the settings (the sliders should be all centered).

Opening the jpeg in any other editor or browser should ignore your edits, especially the crop.

For the organizer, when you exit the ACR by 'Done' or 'Open', the thumbnail should show your choice of original or edited.

I tried to import only the original back into Organizer, it displayed as the original but, again, when I imported it into the Editor it came up as the same edited version.

If I Import the original file into Organizer, the catalog thumbnail shows the correct original version and when I display it full view it also shows the uncropped full version.

If I then import this file from Organizer into the Elements Editor it imports as the edited cropped version.

You mean the thumbnail shows the orginal, but when you 'Open', the ACR dialog shows the edits (the sliders are no longer centered) and the crop is effective? That's really strange, the organizer uses the ACR routines for the full view with the edits.

The only scenario I could imagine would be that you really have an original jpeg without any raw edits from the ACR module. Using a third party software to convert, an xmp file might have been created as a sidecar file in ulterior editing stages. But your worklow seems to eliminate that possibility:

Seeing that I have removed all the files from my computer ( except from the Recycle bin ) and then brought back only the original, I can't make any sense of this.

May be a look at the detail of the properties of the original files in the organizer (CAMERA RAW section) or in the editor (File >> File info) could shed some light on this mystery.
