Problem refining edges Photoshop Elements 2020

I have a problem with the "refining edges" part. After choosing the overlay in view mode, checking the smart radius and filling in the pixels for the radius, the overlay disappears when returning to the edit screen. This prevents me from refining the edges. Where can I fix this. See examples. Regards, Richard
