Problems with erase on PS Elements

When using the eraser on PS Elements, the circle and/or square does not appear on the desktop area. Thus, I am not sure where my boundaries are when trying to erase an area. This has happened to me about 3-4 times in the past 4 months and is random. Can anyone suggest a fix????? Note: I use this program almost daily so I am well versed in erasing parts of a photo to create a png file.

    Make sure your caps lock is off.

    Also check your preferences for cursor settings.
