Product Defect: Photoshop Elements 15 leaves temporary files in open directory
I use several Adobe Photoshop products. There's been a defect in the Photoshop Elements Organizer since at least version 10. Here's what happens. I often have both PSE Organizer and Adobe Bridge open at the same time with both applications looking at the images in the same directory. After I've added tags to the photos with PSE Organizer I will use the "Save meta data to files" feature to have all the tags incorporated into the associated files. As PSE Organizer is going about this task, it appears to open a copy of the file under a name that uses the base file name appended with "_edTMP-1". Of course, Adobe Bridge is "sitting" there watching for any updates taking place in the folder that it has open and will attempt to update the images it displays for that folder when PSE Organizer creates the new temp file. What eventually happens is some kind of file access conflict takes place and PSE Organizer will either leave the temporary file in the folder along with the base file, or will only leave the temporary file. I'm guessing that PSE Organizer isn't looking for the return code when it tries to access the file that Bridge has opened. I would estimate this happens on 10% to 15% of the files that are accessed. The important message here is that it does not happen on every file that is updated, which suggest this may be some kind of a race condition that exists between the two applications and the failure of one to play well with others.
The workaround is to remember to close all other applications that are accessing the folder before trying to save the meta data to the file. Unfortunately I don't always remember to do that and I end up having to spend time manually correcting the file names.
