Adobe Photoshop Elements 2026
Program error in photo editor 26.0
JPG file. Windows 11 (Version 23H2)

Selecting an area with the Smart Brush tool "Enhance".
Then "Retouch Image", "Adjust Lighting", "Shadows/Highlights...", "Brighten Shadows"
Error: No preview, even though the box is checked. Clicking "OK" results in the error message:
The "Shadows/Highlights" command could not be executed because a program error occurred. See attached screenshot.

Once you have used the smart brush a new layer is created with a mask. Open the layers panel - see image.

Select the background layer and then make your Enhance adjustments. They will only be revealed on your image in the white parts of the mask. The preview will then work.

Thank you so much for your answere.

But I am verry sorry. Your suggestion is not working. Same effect as written from me before.

Significant: There pops up an window with the content "Photoshop Elements Error". That meens there is a mistake in the Photosop Elements software. The snapshot of the pop up window is attached.

Does it work from the Layer menu as an adjustment layer?

Layer >  New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast
