PSE 15: Clone tool no longer works

Hello:

The clone tool has stopped working.  It lightens the copied section of the photo.  (Present clone tool settings are:  soft brush, normal, and 100% opaque.)  Attached is a portion of the photo I've been working on that shows the problem:

The brightness level of the tool changed and I don't why or what I may have done.  The copied portion along the left edge of the attached photo shows what I'm speaking of. To darken the copy I have to run the curser back/forth which doesn't look good.  Prior I was attempting to see if I could copy a portion of the photo and then flip the copy.  My Cut, Copy, Paste, and Move tools appear to work normally with no changes to the copied portion of the photo.  I reset the clone brush to its default settings with no effect.  Having said all this, the clone brush now copies clear.

I tested two other photos (PSD files) and all photos are affected.  I purchased my copy of PSE 15 from B&H on disc; it has been updated by Adobe with no problems.  I could reload PSE 15 from the disc as a means of resetting the entire program back to the original but that'll be the last ditch action.  How would I do this without deleting/affecting the photos on my external drive?

Suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

Hopefully resetting the pse 15 editor preferences will solve the issue.

Go to Edit<Preferences>General (windows) or Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>Preferences>General (mac)

click on Reset Preferences on next launch and then restart the pse 15 editor.
