PSE 15-how to apply a mask?

I am befuddled as how to apply a mask in PSE 15.

Legend

You need two layers and then you click on the layer mask button in the layers panel.

Choose your brush tool and set the foreground color to black, and select the mask thumbnail.

Then paint on your image in the main window. Any area painted black will be concealed.

A layer mask can be white, black or gray which will vary how much is revealed or concealed.
