PSE 2021 Poor Performance on M1 Mac

I just switched from PC to Mac, got a new Mac Mini (16GB/500GB). It's lightning fast on pretty much everything-- except PSE 2021. I mainly use the Organizer to keep track of personal photos, have 10+ years of tags. The performance so slow as to be nearly unusable. Every move, clicking a tag, resizing photos, etc. is literally 4 or 5 seconds behind or even more. Both the catalog and the media are stored on the Mac's internal SSD. By contrast, Lightroom Classic is very quick.

Anyone have any ideas? I've been using PSE forever, but I can't live with this.
