PSE 2023 MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE UPGRADE OF THE ORGANISER

I am still having major problems with PSE 2023 upgrade  installation and setup.  Fortunately I still have PSE 2020 working and can use that for the moment.

1. After some support from Adobe due to the upgrade failing to download, I then received some MS C++ Runtime Library errors. That is still not sorted and I contiunue to get the error, this sometimes causes PSE Organiser to close down, but not the Editor.

2. However, I found, converted (to PSE 2023), my catalog for the old PSE 2020. That new catalog was stored in the default location in App Data. I was then offered to import my images from my Data drive and then to import all of the Keyword and Smart tags. However, none of my tags appear on the right hand side of the Organiser screen only the default (and empty) PSE 2023 ones.

3. Clicking on a thumbnail and the 'Info' shows all my metadata, etc.  But if I highlight a thumbnail then click the Editor, nothing happens - Editor doesn't open the file. I also then get the Microsoft Runtime Library C++ error notification (which I can't copy and attach to this discussion.

I am happy to uninstall PSE 2023 if necessary, but don't want to lose my, working, PSE 2020 and all its catalog, images and keywords.

Once again with Adobe PSE upgrades, I'm totally confused. Grateful for assistance.

Regards, etc

You will not lose your tags, although it may take a little while to restructure the tag hierarchy.

If you are able to open the old catalog, you can export the tag structure to an xml file which can then be imported into your new catalog.  Do this before importing your media files.  When you import your photos into the new catalog, you will be given the opportunity to map the existing tags to the tag hierarchy structure that you have imported.

If you are unable to export the tag structure, then you can still choose to import the files' keyword tags when you import them to the new catalog.  However, they will appear under the Imported keyword tags category.  You can then move each tag to a new structure that you will have to build.  People, Places, Events tags will come in as plain keyword tags, so you will have to retag those, but there are easy ways to do it.

Take a look at this keyword tag article and let me know if you have any questions about my suggestions.

Ref my post above and the problems with Adobe.  I bit the bullet, uninstalled (Revo Uninstaller), restarted and then re-installed (but from the complete program downloaded by an Adobe Techie, not the link which then accesses the Adobe files on their site as this always failed.  The re-installation worked, the program found my correct catalog.

Going over my notes, I think that it was the graphics card not 'managing' DirectX 12.

Thank you to all who advised.  I'm still not happy with the poor service from the Adobe 'Senior Team'; despite many assurances that they would call me, they never did.  There's no email address tom submit a complaint and if you go into the UK telephone Help line, it immediately transfers you to the USA line.

Anyway, thank you all.

@michael g.b35170387, I have no idea whether this will help, but make sure that your graphics card driver is up to date.

Called & chatted with Adobe and Microsft for 7.5 hours over past few days. I have the same problem with Elements Organizer freezing  with the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error  Assertion Failed . Microsoft spend 1 hr on my computer and said Windows is fine. Finally got through to "escalated" support at Adobe. I was told that the problem with Visual ++ in the Element Organizer 2023 is a known issue and 'fix' will be in next update. Date of that was unknown. Sounded like he knew what he was talkin about - but could have just beem placating me.

Problem, he says, is with importing *.tiff files. If there is just one such file in your catalog the error occurs - for some customers. Problem is not common to all - obviously. I have two "identical" computers (WIN 11, manufacturer, model) etc and problem is on one but not the other.

Interstingly he told me I can start another catalog in Organizer 2023 and re import all photos and that will work. So sounds like a catalog importing problem. A sol'n perhaps - but my thousands of TAGs are lost. Not pleased.

@sweepling said:  I tried your technique and there are 4 catalogs showing (plus a number of -wal and -shm files) in file explorer. Opening the largest by double clicking in File Explorer open PSE 2023 and all of my tags are there in the correct hierarchy. Assuming that that catalog is a PSE 2020 file, if I then convert it, I get an error screen showing the MS C++ problem.

If you did as I suggested and searched for files named catalog.pse21db, then the catalog that was opened in Elements 2023 is the correct catalog for Elements 2023.  (Elements 2023 is version 21 of the program.  That is why the Elements 2023 catalog is named catalog.pse21db.)   Since the catalog is already in the correct format for Elements 2023, it cannot be converted again.  So, I'm guessing that when you tried to do that, the error messages were thrown up.

Part of the problem with your screenshots is that you do not have file extensions showing.  That is why the catalog files are showing simply as Catalog, and do not show which version the file is for.  I think this is causing some of your confusion.

Many thanks for your guidance.  I'll change the File explorer view.  Just waiting now for Adobe Techies to resolve the PSE Editor problem.

Grateful.

PSE Elements Organizer 2023: Has anyone solved the MSVisual C++ Runtime Library "Assertion Failed" problem. Very frustrating. Organizer unusable. Thanks

Thanks for the screenshots which are somewhat helpful.

But let's try a different approach.  Do a search of your computer for all files named:  catalog.pse21db

Double-click on each one, and the Elements Organizer will open the catalog associated with that database file.  One of them should be the converted catalog with all of your keyword tags in the proper hierarchy in Keywords panel.

Although it is not entirely clear from your screenshots, I suspect that because you have changed the default locations for your catalog, the converted catalog has been created within another catalog's folder.  So you may find that you have two catalog.psexxdb files within the same folder.

Thanks Greg,  I'll try that later today.  And yes, I did move the catalog to mt D data drive; that was for ease of backing-up, but seems to have complicated things.

Grateful.  I'll let you know.

If you truly completed the conversion of your old catalog in Elements 2023, then there would be no need to import any of your existing catalog photos into the converted catalog.  So, I suspect that you have not waited for the completion of the conversion to take place OR you have opened the wrong catalog.

In order to make it easier for us to help you, please show us a screenshot of the dialog that appears when you select File>Manage Catalogs:

Many thanks Greg,  I attach 3 screen shots.  The first the MS Visual C++ error code which I got this morning.  The next 3 are of the 3 'choices' on the Manage catalogs dropdown.

Most grateful.

AMENDMENT:

My Keyword Tags appear in a plain list under 'Imported Keyword Tags' - the hierarchy has been lost and they are useless.  But what have I done wrong?

Regards..
