pse 7 to pse 14 upgrade, backup problem and places tagging

I've recently upgraded PSE 7 to 14 and encountered problems.

Firstly all my 'places' tags that I previously organised in folders under PSE 7 I can no longer do as the software doesn't allow me to do it! When I click the '+' sign  next to Places in the tags box, I do not get the option to create a sub-folder. Does anyone have a work around?

Because of the above issue, I'm considering downgrading back to PSE 7 to give me back the flexibility of organising places tags, however after upgrading the catalogue, will PSE 7 recognise the catalogue that is now upgraded to 14?

Finally, before I attempt to downgrade, the minimum I want to achieve is a full backup of the PSE 14 catalogue so I can always reinstall PSE 14 and get back to where I'm at now if downgrading fails. However the backup facility, since upgrading from 7 to 14, will only let me backup photos I've imported since the upgrade (another hurdle!!). It will not detect any of my photos that were previously in 7, even though I can view the photos in the 14 catalogue and open up the folder  directly from the photo in the catalogue (which implies it knows where they all are!)

Any suggestions would be most a appreciated.

Thanks

Craig.

...

Craig.

- Old way of managing places: they are in a 'standard' keywords category and you can manage them like any other pre-defined categories like People, or your own 'custom' categories, animals, portraits, landscapes... No link to a geomapping external software.

- New way: you get the advantage of Google maps for organizing and displaying your pictures on maps. No way to customize the locations hierarchy.

I am afraid the only way to solve your problem is to use both systems at the same time, at least for a part of your library...

Because of the above issue, I'm considering downgrading back to PSE 7 to give me back the flexibility of organising places tags, however after upgrading the catalogue, will PSE 7 recognise the catalogue that is now upgraded to 14?

No, there is no downgrade option. The only option when migrating from old to new organization is to rename your 'People' category in the old version before converting to the new version: for instance, 'my People' category will not be converted to the new geotagging scheme of Google Maps. You can always convert an old PSE7 catalog to PSE14 like that, but you'll have to reimport the files imported directly since that date...

Finally, before I attempt to downgrade, the minimum I want to achieve is a full backup of the PSE 14 catalogue so I can always reinstall PSE 14 and get back to where I'm at now if downgrading fails. That's not clear for me.

When you install PSE14, you get a warning dialog asking you to 'convert' your old catalog, which means nothing is lost from the old catalog. If you have not agreed to that, you have only newly imported files (they may be the same as those in the PSE7 catalog).

Thanks for the prompt reply!

In the time between my query and your response I've managed to discover that the old pse 7 catalogue file was retained during the conversion, and as I have only had 1 import since the conversion, I have reverted back to the old PSE 7 catalog and re-imported the latest photos.

It seems however even in the 7 catalog, the backup is still failing as it was in 14. It seems that only photos imported since the conversion are backing up. I've tried full and incremental backups, and the files all appear to be recognized by  the catalog - very odd.
