PSE9, camera raw and installation from USB drive

I have PSE 9 on an older desktop computer. Everything is fine, including camera raw. It loads and edits NEF raw files from my Nikon D7000 without any problem.

Back in those Olden Days, PSE came on an optical disk.

I want to install PSE, with Camera Raw thankyouverymuch, on a new HP ultrabook, which does not have an optical disk drive.

So I copied the Photoshop Elements folder from the original optical disk (Disk 1) onto a USB drive on the desktop machine, and then stuck the drive into the laptop and installed PSE9 (using Setup.exe in the root directory) on the laptop. Since the original license is for two computers, no problem. Loads and edits jpg files without any trouble. However, when I try to load a NEF file (from my old D7000), it encounters an error.

If I attempt to open it directly with OPEN, it says the NEF file is not a valid Photoshop document.

If I use OPEN AS... and select raw as the file type, it says it couldn't complete the request because of a program error.

Either Camera Raw did not install at all, or it did not install correctly.

What did I do wrong?

You just need to update the camera raw plugin.

You can get the camera raw 6.5 plugin updater from here:

Thank you. My original installation was so long ago that I forgot that I had to update ACR.

"Open as..." works now, but the icons to control window size are missing.

Also, Organizer (which I probably won't use much on the laptop) is missing its menu bar. Makes it kind of difficult to import files to Organizer.

Fix for the missing organizer menus:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/menus-missing-elements-8-9.html

As far as i know, in the windows Open, Saves As and Open As dialogs for older versions of photoshop elements, they use the old windows xp style dialogs that don't have the window icons at the top right to resize the dialog.

You can drag on the corners of the dialog to resize or double click at the very top to to go full screen.
