Reconnecting missing files in PSE14 -- need to unstack?

I had a recent hard drive failure but was able to salvage my photo files on a separate drive with different drive letter.  I went into Reconnect All Missing Files in PSE14 and it seems to have worked (at least, I can see the thumbnails).  But I just read somewhere that I was supposed to unstack all my version sets and stacks because PSE might only reconnect the ones on top.  I checked a few randomly and they seem OK.  Is that advice outdated (i.e., can PSE14 now reconnect all files within stacks)?

    This opinion may come from one user using the 'reconnect' function in PSE14 while being in the 'adaptative grid' view, which is the default. All the browsing space is filled with images without any text (filename, date) nor any stack/version set icon. You use the shortcut Ctrl D to get back to the default 'detailed' view.

    You are right it's easy to check on a test catalog.

    - on the empty new catalog, import a subfolder with stacks.

    - rename the subfolder in the Explorer/Finder

    - Check your new catalog. All items will be missing. Reconnect from the renamed folder. You should find the same number of items.

    - Don't forget to rename your subfolder back for your main catalog; delete the test catalog when you have opened your regular one.

    I'm sorry, your response was a bit over my head.  Is there any way to check that all my photos reconnected, short of manually going into each folder to check?  If the thumbnail now appears under my new drive, does that mean the catalog successfully reconnected (and edits are all there).  I plan to upgrade soon to CC so I want to make sure everything's in good shape before I transfer the catalog over.

    Simply check a second time for disconnect files.

    - from the File menu

    - or from the Find menu

    If files are still disconnected, you'll know immediately, but I very much doubt it.

    My explanation was to suggest a reason for the (wrong) asumption you read somewhere.

    Suppose only the top of stack file is restored: when you do a Find >> missing files, you'll see all the other files in expanded stacks in the list of still missing files.
