Reinstalling Photoshop Elements 12

I recently had a problem with my computer when I changed my Microsoft password and thus the password for the computer. The computer acted like I had created a new user. Therefore, some programs that had been installed under the previous password were not available to the "new" user. even though both users were Administrators. That has been corrected and I now have only 1 user. I have been reinstalling programs as I discover ones that won't work. Photoshop Elements is one of those programs. I am concerned that if I reinstall the program, all my events, pictures, etc. will be lost or confused to the program. I have no way to back up and then restore the catalog. How should I proceed?

The last time I upgraded Elements I had a real mess because it did not translate the catalog information correctly and I spent a lot of time straightening it all out. Open to knowledgeable suggestions - I only get one try at this.
