Rename file not working

Using Photoshop Elements 2020. Until recently I could rename a file of any length within the information field of the media panel using cut and paste from the caption field. I use that rather than the rename option under file menu as my preferred filenames are greater than 30 characters. Suddenly this stopped working, giving a message "file rename operation could not be completed". The operating system in Windows 10 with all updates installed. 

Please advise how this functionality can be restored.
